Dog Agility Course In Marmora Arena
By Jan Fenato

(published in April, 2007 in “The Shield”, Marmora Edition)

Marmora - If it's Tuesday, this must be Dog Agility night at the Marmora Arena. April 24, as every Tuesday, saw the agility course components being hauled out and put in place. Jerry Roy of the Marmora Cup Dog Club oversees the evening with the help of his clever dog Kandy who runs through the course flawlessly. She's been enjoying this activity for about a year. Meanwhile, John Langley's dog Penny is just beginning to understand that she's supposed to go under, over, through and around all the different obstacles in her path.

Dog Agility is something we hear more and more about these days. While it's not exactly a sport for people, it certainly does give owners a workout. It's a social outing for the dogs too and it's not a had way to get to know other dog lovers in town. A chance to take your dog during the mornings on Tuesdays may also become available.

For more information about dog agility in Marmora, call Jerry Roy at 613-472-2381. Each dog goes at his or her own pace. It's not a competition. Even if your dog isn't the smartest dog on the block, he or she will eventually get through the course successfully - it just takes practice. And, most importantly, man's best friend loves it. They all agreed when asked – Rouff!

Marmora Cup Dog Club enjoys agility challenge
By Gabriella Hamley

(Published on October 6, 2006 in both "The Community Press" and "The Shield")

MCDC members consider themselves very fortunate that the Club has invested in agility equipment.  Mostly novices to the sport, we have discovered that agility is the most fun you can have with your dog.

Not having a professional instructor, this has been a self-help group.  With the aid of some more experienced members and some excellent instructional videos, these happy dogs and their owners have made great progress in mastering the obstacles and gaining speed and confidence on the course.

Agility is a joyful activity, fun for dogs and humans alike.  Only positive reinforcement is used, in the form of treats, hugs and exuberant noises when the dog performs a task successfully.  Club members are very helpful and supportive to each other.  There is a wonderful camaraderie and a ready sharing of observations and advice. And, as a major benefit, dog and owner form a new kind of bond, developing a partnership and taking their relationship to a higher level.

Throughout the summer, there were twice-weekly agility classes.  The equipment not as yet having a permanent home, it has travelled to club members who had sufficient outdoor space on their property to set it up. With winter coming, we are working hard to find a large, empty barn or a horseback riding facility in the Marmora area where we may continue practicing throughout the year and not lose some of our hard-gained skills.

New members are always welcome in the MCDC.  Anyone interested can call Club Secretary Linda Roy at 613-472-2381 after 4 p.m. daily.  Also, we would appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer indoor facility for our winter practice.
