I.Meeting a strange dog

1.      How to approach a dog – owner present

(This part is demonstrated with dog)

-         ask owner: OK to pet?

-         Move slowly

-         Let dog sniff the back of your hand, fingers curled

-         Reach out from below and side closest to you

-         Speak in quiet, calm voice

-         Avoid eye contact with dog

-         Pet gently and slowly

2.      How to behave with strange dog – no owner present

-         Stay calm

-         Turn head or whole body away

-         Move slowly away

3.      How to behave with dog on chain or behind fence

-         Don’t approach at all

 

II.Responsible dog ownership

1.      What the dog needs:

-         good, nutrituos food – no cooked bones

-         fresh, clean water

-         a warm, dry place to sleep

-         access to toilet area when he needs it

-         safety from other animals and mean people

-         check that collar is not too tight

-         keep free of fleas and ticks, brush fur and trim nails

-         yearly vet visits – rabies shot

-         neutering – no unwanted puppies

-         no pain, threat of pain, scary situations

-         no violence, anger, or aggression in his environment

-         peace and quiet to sleep

-         company of humans, affection

-         exercise - daily walks

-         some basic obedience training

2.      Signs that the dog’s needs are not met

-         behaving aggressively

-         overly submissive behaviour

-         scratching, biting himself

-         barking, howling, whining

-         panting, shivering

-         sickness, diarrhea

-         skin problems

-         chewing on furniture
